Yellowstone Erupts!

Hydrothermal Explosion Rocks Biscuit Basin

Massive Column of Boiling Water, Mud, and Rock Sent Skyward

A dramatic hydrothermal explosion occurred at Yellowstone National Park's Biscuit Basin on Tuesday morning, sending a towering column of boiling water, mud, and rock into the sky. The stunning event was captured on video by park visitors.

The Biscuit Basin area has been closed due to the explosion, which occurred near the Sapphire Pool at approximately 10:19 am. Park staff and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) are monitoring the situation and conducting investigations.

Similar to an explosion that occurred in the same area in 2009, this latest hydrothermal event serves as a reminder of the park's dynamic and hazardous geothermal environment. As always, visitors are urged to stay on designated trails and observe posted warnings.
