Auroras to Put on a Show Over the Weekend

Aurora activity expected to peak Saturday night

Updated: May 11, 2024, 2:13 p.m.

Keep an eye on the skies Saturday night. Aurora activity is expected to peak, with the best viewing expected between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Auroras are most likely to be seen in the northern parts of the state, but may be visible as far south as the Twin Cities.

The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, is a natural light display in the sky, primarily visible at high latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic). Auroras are produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind. These disturbances are caused by variations in the solar wind that produce a solar storm which, in turn, accelerates the particles away from the Sun and towards the Earth's magnetic poles.
